Recycling
The City of Fredericksburg's Recycling Center located at 302 E. Ufer St. has become a model for small cities. We have visitors daily from other small towns in Texas that are interested in starting a center of their own. The success of our center can be attributed to you, the citizens of Fredericksburg for your efforts in recycling.

Despite all the recycling that the citizens of Fredericksburg and Gillespie County are currently doing, there is still a vast amount of paper going into our landfill. The majority of recyclable papers we see going into the landfill are white bond and computer paper. We encourage you to make up a recycling bin at both home and work to collect all waste paper that is recyclable. Click HERE for a brochure describing all items taken at the center.

Many people think recycling is limited to the items they bring to the center. This is not true. Back in 1991, the City Council passed an ordinance prohibiting yard waste from entering our landfill. This is important, as yard waste typically represents approximately 20% of all waste going into a landfill. The City provides chipper service for all of it's residents. You simply place your tree limbs and brush at the curb next to the street in front of your residence and the chipper crew will be by at least once a week to pick them up. The resulting chips may be picked up by anyone at the recycling center at no charge to be used as flowerbed mulch, etc..

When you mow your grass, we encourage you to mulch it and let the clippings fall back into the grass and put valuable nutrients back into the soil. If you cannot mulch, you may bring the clippings to the landfill and place them on the compost pile at no charge. This also applies to other yard waste such as the weeds and dead plants cleaned from flower beds and gardens. For people who cannot drive to the landfill, we have placed a dumpster at the recycling center. We ask that you place ONLY dead plants, weeds, vines, and other small yard waste (NO BRUSH, TRASH OR PLASTIC BAGS) as space is very limited.

The City also has a leaf pickup program during the Fall and early Spring. Simply place all leaves approximately one foot from the curb and the City crews will pick them up on a regular basis. If you have any questions or comments concerning recycling or water and energy conservation, please contact Russell Immel at the city offices located at 126 W. Main St.; phone number (830) 997-7521.

Garbage Collection Operations

The City of Fredericksburg offers garbage collection for residential customers only.  Commercial garbage collection is provided by private, for profit companies.

Residential garbage collection is provided once weekly. Your garbage should be placed at your designated curb location for pickup by 7:00 a.m.  Please make certain arrow is pointing toward curb. If your collection day falls on a holiday, it will be picked up as usual.

Garbage Containers

Upon notification to the Solid Waste Department you will be entitled to a plastic cart supplied by the City of Fredericksburg. You can choose from three sizes of garbage carts. Your monthly garbage fee will depend on the size of the cart you select. Just as with your water or electric bill, you pay less when you use less.

The rates for the three sizes of carts are:

32 gallon cart.:

$8.75 per month (Inside City Limits)

This size cart is suitable for single person households that generally place less than 4 garbage bags out per week for collection.

64 gallon cart

$9.25 per month (Inside City Limits)

This size cart is suitable for two person households that generally place up to 2 trash cans for collection once per week.

96 gallon cart

$9.75 per month (Inside City Limits)

This size cart is generally required by families of 4 or more.

AUTOMATED COLLECTION SYSTEM

The most important feature of automated systems is that it allows your city to collect garbage much more efficiently.

Automation eliminates manual loading, thus reducing job-related injuries.

The City will supplies an extremely durable container with a close fitting lid. This eliminates expense on your part for personal cans. Litter, odor and fly problems are greatly reduced.

The curbside containers are maneuverable and easy to roll. No strained backs from "carrying out the garbage."

The following materials will NOT be collected by City Crews during regular garbage collection:

Earth, rocks, broken concrete, asphalt

Roofing materials or any trash generated by contractors or private businesses on your premises.

Yard Waste (Yard waste may be taken to the Municipal Landfill and placed on the compost pile at no charge).

Leaf Collection

Leaf collection is available to all residential garbage customers at no additional charge. Leaves are collected during the Fall and again in the Spring. Notice of the dates will be in the local newspaper and on the local radio stations. Residents are asked to place their leaves on the street in front of their residence approximately one foot from the curb line. Leaf collection crews patrol all streets within the city limits. There is no additional charge for this service.

Chipper Service

Residential Customers. Those who are currently receiving City of Fredericksburg garbage pick-up service are entitled to this free brush-chipping service. This includes customers in duplexes, four-plexes, apartments, B&Bs, and manufactured home parks, and is intended to be used for disposal of tree limbs removed from that customer’s residential property only. The first 15 minutes of chipping is free. If the crew cannot finish a chipping job within 15 minutes, they must move on to the next job, and will contact the customer to explain that they were not able to complete the customer’s chipping within the 15-minute maximum. If that occurs, crews will return to the property on the next route cycle and complete the job, still free of charge. If a customer wants all of the brush chipped, and the job extends beyond the initial 15 minutes, there will be a fee of $15 for every 15-minute increment thereafter, with a minimum charge of $15 to be billed to the customer. Customers are encouraged to contact the city office at 997-7521 prior to starting a major trimming job, or if they are expecting an abnormally large volume of limbs.

Commercial Customers. The brush chipping service is also provided to the city’s commercial customers inside the city limits. Chipping is not free for commercial customers; their fee is $15 for every 15 minutes, with a minimum charge of $30. Due to demand for chipping services, the chipper crew is not able to remain longer than one hour at any commercial site. 126 West Main Street, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, 830-997-7521

What can customers do to help the crews be as efficient as possible and keep the brush chipper in safe and operating condition?

City crews request that customers observe the following guidelines to help them be as prompt as possible in making their way to all customers, while ensuring the safety of the chipping crew:

Place all limbs on the curb next to the street (not in the street). Crews will not go on private property or in alleys to get limbs.

Limbs should be 6 feet long or longer (as long as can easily be handled).

Place the cut section toward the street.

Brush piles should be no larger than 4’ high by 8’ wide, and no more than 2 piles per residence.

No limbs larger than 8” in diameter.

No stumps or roots (stumps and roots will be picked up with a loader and dump truck at a minimum rate of $50 per load plus landfill fees).

No vines, grass, leaves, bushes, or garden plants. Also, no wire or construction materials. All of these items can actually cause mechanical problems for the brush chipper, as well as creating safety hazards for the crew.

Limbs larger than 1” in diameter must be trimmed from the main stem.

Limbs trimmed by commercial contract tree trimmers will not be chipped. The contractor is responsible for disposing of debris.

Wood chips that are produced as a result of the brush chipping may be picked up free of charge at the landfill. The city crews are not able to put the chips back onto the property owner’s lot. For more information on the city’s brush chipping policy, customers are encouraged to call 830-997-7521.
