| | City Issues New Glass Recycling Policy Due to the fact that there is no longer a saleable market for glass, the City of Fredericksburg issued a new glass recycling policy at the City Council meeting Monday night. “Unfortunately, glass is no longer economically viable as a recycling material in our area,” stated City Councilman Tom Musselman. Glass has been sent to the Waco landfill while Fredericksburg CARES (Community Awareness Regarding Environmental Solutions) conducted research on an alternate solution for glass disposal. After looking into the matter, CARES determined, and the City concurred, that there are no other glass recycling options for the City at this time. The new City policy on glass recycling is that glass will only be accepted at the Fredericksburg City Recycling Center until October 1, 2008. After October 1, glass will no longer be taken, thus freeing up space for other revenue generating recyclable materials. City officials further stated that citizens should dispose of glass in their household trash. Businesses should dispose of glass in their refuse containers. Bulldozers at the City landfill will then crush the glass along with other trash, thereby reducing its overall volume. The City of Fredericksburg will discontinue sending glass to the Waco landfill for disposal. The City and CARES will continue to look for alternative uses for recycled glass or future recycling options. Glass recycling will be restored when a market presents itself and it is again economically viable. City officials urge citizens and businesses to continue to recycle all currently accepted items at the City Recycling Center- such as cardboard, paper, aluminum, cans, plastic, newspaper and magazines. For more information on the new glass recycling policy citizens may call the City Recycling Center at 997-5157 or CARES at 997-4060.
