A MEMO FROM MAYOR TOM MUSSELMAN...

Despite the brief shower we had this week, the City is still undergoing a severe drought. We have had 5" of rain this year, whereas last year, we had received 25" by July. Though not in proportion or length to the drought of the 1950's, this situation is still causing undue hardship to our residents. We take pride in how our homes and neighborhoods look, especially our landscaping. But having water for our homes for bathing, washing, and drinking is essential.

Therefore it is important for us to realize that we must all bear and share the hardship equally in water conservation.

The major problem is that current water demand is outstripping our ability to supply water, mainly in the northern part of our city. The City Council voted last night to move City residents to a Monday through Friday weekday watering schedule.

The City is very aware of the pressure problem on the north side of town, especially in the Cherry Blossom, Cross Mountain West, and Stone Ridge neighborhoods. We are having continuing problems with the water regulating valve in the north pressure plane that affects these neighborhoods. Currently, we have 50% of households demanding water on Saturday and Sunday. The new schedule should cut this percentage to 20% daily. Hopefully, it will also alleviate some of the pressure problems we are now experiencing.

In the meantime, we must continue to conserve, obey the water restrictions, and work together in our community to see through this time of crisis. In addition, we can all continue to pray for rain. Our hope is that we do not have to move to Stage 5 but we must be prepared for every eventuality.
