In 1987, the City of Fredericksburg purchased the northern half of Market Square from the school district in an effort to preserve it and return it to the people of Fredericksburg for their use and enjoyment.
The Market Square Redevelopment Commission was formed in 1988 in cooperation with the City of Fredericksburg to provide advisory and managerial expertise to guide the project. Members were selected on the basis of their professional, scientific, education and financial management knowledge as well as their expressed interest in Marktplatz.
