[ARCHIVED] Saint Martin’s Day Event To Feature Scavenger Hunt Format

2024 Saint Martins Day Flyer

Fredericksburg, Texas – The City of Fredericksburg Parks and Recreation Department, in partnership with the Pioneer Museum, will host a Saint Martin's Day Scavenger Hunt, on Monday, Nov. 11.

The second-annual come-and-go event will be held from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Pioneer Museum located at 325 W. Main St.

Designed as an educational experience for children under the age of 10, the event will allow participants to craft a personalized lantern. During the scavenger hunt, children will search for colored coins around the museum grounds, while learning about the history of Saint Martin. Once all coins are collected, children can redeem them for a bag of sweet treats.

For admittance to the event, each attendee is asked to bring a canned good for the Fredericksburg Food Pantry, or a nutritional snack for the Food 4 Kids Program, sponsored by the Hill Country Community Needs Council.

For more information on the types of nutritional snacks needed and to stay updated on the event, please visit: https://www.fbgtx.org/1145/Saint-Martins-Day-Scavenger-Hunt.

Saint Martin's Day, historically observed on November 11, celebrates the spirit of giving and sharing, inspired by a selfless act of Saint Martin of Tours, a Roman soldier who became a bishop in a French town. Saint Martin's Day has evolved into an occasion marked by feasts, dances, bonfires, and a lantern procession.

At the heart of this event is the tale of Saint Martin's kindness – when he divided his cloak to warm a beggar during a snowstorm. To honor this gesture, children attending the event are encouraged to dress in red, symbolizing the iconic cloak, as they embark on a journey of light, song, and treats.

"The Saint Martin's Day Celebration embodies the spirit of compassion, sharing, and togetherness," Jennifer Krupa, City of Fredericksburg Special Event Coordinator, said.  "We are thrilled to bring this centuries-old tradition to life in Fredericksburg, giving families the opportunity to create lasting memories and pass down the values of generosity and kindness."
